Discover Dunnellon: A Laid-Back Escape with Riverfront Charm

Tucked between Ocala and the Gulf Coast, Dunnellon is one of those towns that surprises you—in the best way. It’s quiet but full of character. Small, but never boring. With two rivers, historic buildings, and some of the clearest water in Florida, it’s a place where you can slow down, explore, and still find new things to love every time you visit.

I’ve spent time working with small businesses around Dunnellon and always look forward to any excuse to pass through. Here’s a local-friendly rundown of what makes this town special.

💧 Float the Rainbow River

Let’s start with the obvious: the Rainbow River. If you’ve never floated it, go. If you’ve done it before, go again.

Crystal-clear, spring-fed, and surrounded by lush greenery, it’s one of the most peaceful floats you’ll ever take. You can tube, kayak, paddleboard, or just swim—it’s all good. You’ll spot turtles, fish, birds, and maybe even an otter or two.

Launch spots like KP Hole Park and Rainbow Springs State Park make it easy to get in the water for a relaxing day in the Florida sun.

🚣 Withlacoochee River Adventures

While the Rainbow gets most of the love, the Withlacoochee River is Dunnellon’s hidden gem. It’s darker, wilder, and feels like stepping back in time. If you like fishing, birding, or quiet exploration, the Withlacoochee is the river for you.

You can also paddle where the two rivers meet, which is a cool mix of clear and tannin-rich waters merging together.

🛍️ Historic Downtown Dunnellon

Downtown Dunnellon is full of charm. Think antique shops, mom-and-pop restaurants, art galleries, and the kind of businesses that still know your name.

Some spots worth visiting:

  • Grumbles House Antiques & Garden Shop – A long-standing staple with hidden treasures in every room.

  • Rainbow Springs Art Co-op – Local artists showcasing their work in a cozy downtown storefront.

  • The Front Porch Restaurant – Great home-cooked food with a vintage country vibe.

  • Sweetie’s Cafe & Bakery – Amazing baked goods and a perfect coffee stop.

You won’t find big box stores or franchises here. Just honest, homegrown businesses doing what they do best.

🍴 Food Worth Stopping For

Dunnellon may be small, but the food is solid. A few local favorites include:

  • Blue Gator Tiki Bar & Restaurant – Right on the water with seafood, live music, and a true Old Florida vibe.

  • Swampy’s – Outdoor dining on the river with gator bites, burgers, and a view that’s hard to beat.

  • Don Pepe Mexican Restaurant – Great portions and authentic flavors tucked right along 41.

  • Brick City Eatery – Newer to the scene and making waves with wood-fired pizza and scratch-made meals.

🌲 Trails, Parks & Nature

If you’re the outdoorsy type, Dunnellon won’t disappoint. Besides the rivers, there are miles of hiking and biking trails, hidden springs, and quiet forests just outside of town. Blue Run Trail, Halpata Tastanaki Preserve, and even the southern end of the Withlacoochee State Trail are all easy to access and offer some of the best scenery in the region.

🧡 Supporting Small in Dunnellon

Dunnellon is full of hard-working small business owners who do it all themselves. And whether it’s a tube rental place, a boutique, or a riverside café—these are the people that give the town its heart. That’s why I love supporting Dunnellon through my work, helping local shops and services grow their digital presence and connect with more customers.
