Crystal River is one of my favorite places to spend a weekend. From spring-fed waters and manatees to fresh seafood and small-town charm, this Gulf Coast gem has something for everyone. I work with a lot of businesses in and around Crystal River, so I’ve spent plenty of time exploring what makes this area so special—and I want to share some of my favorite spots with you.
🐋 Swim with Manatees (Yes, Really)
Crystal River is famous for its manatees, and for good reason—it’s the only place in the U.S. where you can legally swim with them. In the cooler months, they flock to places like Three Sisters Springs to stay warm, and guided tours let you snorkel right alongside them. It’s a peaceful, unforgettable experience that everyone should try at least once.
🚣 Paddle Clear, Spring-Fed Waters
Rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the stunning waterways around Hunter Springs Park or King’s Bay. You’ll float over crystal-clear water, glide past mangroves, and maybe even spot a manatee or two. It’s the perfect way to relax, unplug, and soak in the natural beauty of the area.
🏺 Dive Into Local History
If you’re into history, don’t miss the Crystal River Archaeological State Park. It’s a quiet, peaceful place that preserves ancient Native American temple mounds, plus it offers beautiful views of the river. It’s a great way to connect with Florida’s deeper roots.
🌳 Explore Parks, Wildlife, and Family Fun
Nearby, you’ll find the Crystal River Preserve State Park and Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, both of which are packed with trails, wildlife, and great views. Homosassa Springs is especially fun for kids, with manatee feedings, Florida panthers, and a floating underwater observatory.
